Based in Ancient Olympia, Novi_sad is the moniker of Greek artist Thanasis Kaproulias, whose practice sits between sound art, field recording and spatial composition. His work is driven by a deep engagement with nature, remote environments and the act of translating place into sound, treating listening as an immersive and physical experience rather than a passive one.
Combining technical precision with sensitivity to context, Novi_sad works extensively with field recordings captured in extreme and isolated locations. These recordings are not presented as documentation, but carefully recontextualised, transformed and activated within architectural spaces as in-situ sound works. Every sound is handled with integrity, allowing intensity, resonance and spatial detail to unfold gradually and envelop the listener.
Inspired by the idea of cinéma pour l’oreille (cinema for the ear), Novi_sad’s approach aims to lead the listener toward seeing through sound. Much of his research focuses on architectural acoustics, where raw environmental recordings are brought into dialogue with audio analysis techniques and quantitative data, including scientific and numerical sources. The result is a practice that moves fluidly between the organic and the analytical, creating immersive sonic environments where landscape, structure and perception merge.
