HeritageVR is a VR puzzle for Digital Heritage based on shape representation studies in the virtual reality environment. It is an ongoing research project conducted by Ph.D. students Begüm Moralıoğlu and Begüm Aktaş in Architectural Design Computing Program at Istanbul Technical University. During the HeritageVR experience, participants will try to bring the pieces of the Dark Church in Cappadocia together by using the Oculus Rift/Oculus Quest headset. The 3D puzzle method supports the visual-spatial model by allowing participants to perceive the shapes each time through their contours. Participants need to detect and match the contours to put together the pieces. Since the participants are mostly expected to have less information about the cave monasteries and churches of Cappadocia as well as The Dark Church, the unfamiliar geometry and topology enable participants to see the shapes and shape relations creatively. This research study aims to contribute to the use of VR tools in interactive architectural education in the context of understanding destroyed or ruined heritage in shape representation studies.
