SonarLab by Red Bull Music
Octo Octa’s music reveals the most emotive and human aspect of house. Naturally, her tracks appeal to the dance floor, with rhythm an integral element, but it is her arpeggios, arrangements, and melodies that make her compositions glow with their own distinct light. After a ten year career to date, her sound and potential has been cultivated over time and is crystallized by the superb album, "Where Are We Going?", released on San Francisco label HNYTRX, the editorial arm of the San Francisco Honey Soundsystem queer collective. These new classics will act as the basis for her performance at SonarLab, in the form of an analog live set that typically leaves plenty of room for improvisation and unexpected sounds to manifest.
Maya Bouldry-Morrison began her career on 100% Silk, the cult label based in Los Angeles to which she is still closely linked. At the time her music was somewhat darker, more dense and reflective. In several interviews she has told of the discomfort she felt at being locked in a male body she did not feel was her own. Her status as a transgender artist translates to her music in a subtle but palpable way, noticeable in several of her composition titles and her evolution towards more open and dynamic territories. Her visit to Sónar coincides with an artistic purple patch, after deservedly receiving high acclaim for the album and her subsequent EP, "Adrift". She recently uploaded new tracks to Soundcloud, including "Comfort", in which she has even experimented with drum N bass breaks.
