Performance: The Pier - Ali Demirel - Sónar+D

  • Saturday 25 16:00 - 16:40

The Pier is the first work of Demirel's post-apocalyptic utopia series.  Demirel observes abandoned architectural structures to fantasize about a post-apocalyptic future with no human survivors. How do structures live without the humans they're designed for and by? The work is an artistic take on the beauty of an objectively dystopian scenario.

Ali Demirel studied nuclear engineering at Hacettepe University, and architecture at Middle East Technical University (METU). After receiving his degree in architecture, he worked and lectured at GISAM (Audio-Visual Research Center) of METU. He started making experimental videos in 1993, focusing on minimal imagery and structural compositions. His concepts are often driven from science and architecture. Following his collaboration with Richie Hawtin (aka Plastikman) on music videos, he started to design and perform live visual shows. Reflecting his background in physics and architecture, he has established a unique visual style with minimal electronic music.  Demirel has performed live at prestigious countries and venues around the world such as Sónar Festival, Spain; Mutek Festival, Canada; Coachella, USA; Brixton Academy, London; ADE, Amsterdam; Dissonanze, Rome; Berlin Music Days; Time Warp, Mannheim; Creamfields, UK; Global Gathering, UK; Detroit Electronic Music Festival; Miami Music Conference; Fuji Rock Festival, Japan; Future Music Festival, Australia and South American Music Conference, Buenos Aires.  His work has been presented at Guggenheim Museum, New York; Transmediale & CTM, Berlin; TodaysArt.NL; ifa Galerie, Berlin; ICA, London; [space], London; ACAW, Max Protetch Gallery, New York; Sammlung ESSL, Wien; European Media Art Festival, Osnabruck; State Museum of Fine Arts, Kyrgyzstan; Aksanat, Istanbul; Proje4L, Istanbul; International Short Film Festival, Hamburg; Festival International Cinéma Méditerranéen, Montpellier; !f Istanbul; Antalya Altin Portakal Film Festival; Ankara International Film Festival; among others.
